The Bhagavad Gita on letting go

Detachment is one of the most misunderstood ideas in the Gita. It does not mean not caring, giving up, or withdrawing from life.

The Gita's image for it is the lotus leaf: living fully in the water, yet not soaked through by it.

How the Gita approaches this

Letting go in the Gita means acting wholeheartedly while releasing our grip on outcomes, possessions and the sense of 'mine'. It is described as a source of peace, not loss.

Verses to reflect on

Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 2, Verse 47

karmaṇy evādhikāras te mā phaleṣu kadācana
mā karma-phala-hetur bhūr mā te saṅgo 'stv akarmaṇi

Translation

You have a right to your actions, but never to their fruits. Do not let the results be your motive, and do not be attached to inaction either.

In simple words Interpretation

Put your whole heart into what you do, then loosen your grip on how it turns out. The outcome was never fully yours to hold.

When this may help: When you are anxious about results, exhausted from trying to control everything, or afraid to begin because it might not work out.

A question to sit with: What are you trying to control that may not be yours to control?

Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 5, Verse 10

brahmaṇy ādhāya karmāṇi saṅgaṁ tyaktvā karoti yaḥ
lipyate na sa pāpena padma-patram ivāmbhasā

Translation

One who acts by offering all actions to the Divine, giving up attachment, is untouched by wrongdoing — like a lotus leaf untouched by water.

In simple words Interpretation

You can live fully in the world without letting it soak into you — like a lotus leaf in water.

When this may help: When other people's moods, opinions or drama seem to cling to you.

A question to sit with: Whose mood or opinion have you been carrying as if it were your own?

Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 2, Verse 71

vihāya kāmān yaḥ sarvān pumāṁś carati niḥspṛhaḥ
nirmamo nirahaṅkāraḥ sa śāntim adhigacchati

Translation

One who gives up all cravings and moves through life free from longing, without the sense of 'mine' and without ego — that person attains peace.

In simple words Interpretation

Peace often arrives when we hold things — and ourselves — a little more lightly.

When this may help: When you feel weighed down by needing things to go your way.

A question to sit with: What are you holding onto most tightly right now?

Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 2, Verse 22

vāsāṁsi jīrṇāni yathā vihāya
navāni gṛhṇāti naro 'parāṇi
tathā śarīrāṇi vihāya jīrṇāny
anyāni saṁyāti navāni dehī

Translation

As a person sets aside worn-out clothes and puts on new ones, so the embodied self sets aside worn-out bodies and takes on new ones.

In simple words Interpretation

Endings can also be a kind of renewal — the old giving way so something new can begin.

When this may help: When something in your life has ended — a role, a relationship, a phase — and you're unsure what comes next.

A question to sit with: What might you be ready to set down, like an old garment that no longer fits?

Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 18, Verse 66

sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja
ahaṁ tvā sarva-pāpebhyo mokṣayiṣyāmi mā śucaḥ

Translation

Setting aside all other duties, take refuge in me alone. I will free you from all wrongs — do not grieve.

In simple words Interpretation

‘Mā śucaḥ’ — do not grieve. When everything feels too much, there is a place to rest.

When this may help: When you feel overwhelmed by everything you're supposed to do, or by guilt and worry.

A question to sit with: What would it feel like to put the weight down, just for a few minutes?
