Bhagavad Gita verses for difficult times

When life feels heavy, people have turned to the Gita for centuries — not for quick fixes, but for perspective and steadiness.

These verses are among the most often returned to in hard seasons.

How the Gita approaches this

The Gita meets suffering with a wider view: feelings and circumstances change, something in us is untouched by loss, and we are not alone in carrying our burdens.

Verses to reflect on

Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 2, Verse 14

mātrā-sparśās tu kaunteya śītoṣṇa-sukha-duḥkha-dāḥ
āgamāpāyino 'nityās tāṁs titikṣasva bhārata

Translation

Contact with the world brings cold and heat, pleasure and pain. These come and go; they are not permanent. Learn to bear them patiently, Arjuna.

In simple words Interpretation

What you feel right now is real — and it is also passing. Like weather, it will change.

When this may help: When a feeling seems like it will last forever, or a hard season feels endless.

A question to sit with: What is one feeling you've carried before that eventually passed?

Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 18, Verse 66

sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja
ahaṁ tvā sarva-pāpebhyo mokṣayiṣyāmi mā śucaḥ

Translation

Setting aside all other duties, take refuge in me alone. I will free you from all wrongs — do not grieve.

In simple words Interpretation

‘Mā śucaḥ’ — do not grieve. When everything feels too much, there is a place to rest.

When this may help: When you feel overwhelmed by everything you're supposed to do, or by guilt and worry.

A question to sit with: What would it feel like to put the weight down, just for a few minutes?

Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 9, Verse 22

ananyāś cintayanto māṁ ye janāḥ paryupāsate
teṣāṁ nityābhiyuktānāṁ yoga-kṣemaṁ vahāmy aham

Translation

To those who remember me with undivided attention and are always devoted, I bring what they lack and preserve what they have.

In simple words Interpretation

You don't have to carry everything alone. In the Gita's vision, those who turn toward the Divine are cared for.

When this may help: When worry about the future feels heavy and you long to trust that you'll be looked after.

A question to sit with: What would you set down today if you trusted you'd be cared for?

Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 2, Verse 20

na jāyate mriyate vā kadācin
nāyaṁ bhūtvā bhavitā vā na bhūyaḥ
ajo nityaḥ śāśvato 'yaṁ purāṇo
na hanyate hanyamāne śarīre

Translation

The self is never born, nor does it ever die. It did not come into being, nor will it cease to be. Unborn, eternal, everlasting and ancient, it is not destroyed when the body is destroyed.

In simple words Interpretation

Something in you is untouched by what happens to you — deeper than any loss or label.

When this may help: When grieving, or when you feel diminished by what has happened to you.

A question to sit with: If you weren't defined by what you've lost, how would you describe yourself?

Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 6, Verse 5

uddhared ātmanātmānaṁ nātmānam avasādayet
ātmaiva hy ātmano bandhur ātmaiva ripur ātmanaḥ

Translation

Lift yourself up by your own self; do not let yourself sink down. For the self alone is the friend of the self, and the self alone is its enemy.

In simple words Interpretation

You can be your own friend. The way you speak to yourself can lift you, or pull you down.

When this may help: When your inner voice is harsh, or you feel you need to find strength from within.

A question to sit with: If you spoke to yourself today like a good friend would, what would you say?

A simple practice

Lie down for five minutes and let the floor hold your full weight. You don't have to carry everything at once.
