Bhagavad Gita 2.20

Something in you is untouched by what happens to you — deeper than any loss or label.

Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 2, Verse 20

na jāyate mriyate vā kadācin
nāyaṁ bhūtvā bhavitā vā na bhūyaḥ
ajo nityaḥ śāśvato 'yaṁ purāṇo
na hanyate hanyamāne śarīre

Translation

The self is never born, nor does it ever die. It did not come into being, nor will it cease to be. Unborn, eternal, everlasting and ancient, it is not destroyed when the body is destroyed.

In simple words Interpretation

Something in you is untouched by what happens to you — deeper than any loss or label.

Context

One of the Gita's central statements on the nature of the self (ātman), spoken as Arjuna grieves the losses a war would bring.

When this may help

When grieving, or when you feel diminished by what has happened to you.

Reflection question

If you weren't defined by what you've lost, how would you describe yourself?

A small practice

Write one sentence about someone you miss — not about their absence, but about what of them still lives in you.
